Our Specialist Dental Services
Collins Street Specialist Centre provides specialist dental care in six fields: oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics and paediatric dentistry. Each field is led by registered specialists who practise together on Level 8 of the Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne. This page summarises what each specialty treats, so you can see which one fits your situation and how our specialists combine their care when you need more than one.
Which specialty do you need?
The quickest guide is the problem you have noticed. The list below matches common concerns with the specialty that usually manages them. Your first specialist may suggest seeing a colleague as well once they have examined you.
| If you have | The specialty that usually helps |
|---|---|
| An impacted wisdom tooth, a tooth that needs surgical removal, or a jaw problem | Oral and maxillofacial surgery |
| A painful, infected or previously root-filled tooth | Endodontics |
| Crooked or crowded teeth, or a bite that does not meet properly | Orthodontics |
| Bleeding or receding gums, loose teeth, or a problem around an implant | Periodontics |
| Worn, broken or missing teeth, or a denture that does not fit | Prosthodontics |
| A child or teenager who needs dental treatment or is anxious about the dentist | Paediatric dentistry |
Oral and maxillofacial surgery
Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons hold both dental and medical degrees. They remove impacted wisdom teeth and other difficult teeth, place dental implants, carry out bone grafting, plan corrective jaw surgery with our orthodontists, and diagnose cysts and other lesions of the mouth and jaws. Our surgeons are A/Prof. Patrishia Bordbar and Dr Ricky Kumar. Read more about oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Endodontics
Endodontics deals with the pulp, the soft tissue inside each tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected through deep decay, a crack or an injury, root canal treatment cleans and seals the inside of the tooth so it can be kept. Our endodontists also retreat teeth whose earlier root canal treatment has not healed, and assess cracked teeth. Read more on our endodontics page.
Orthodontics
Orthodontists move teeth and guide jaw growth to improve how teeth fit together and how they look. Treatment can use fixed braces, braces fitted behind the teeth, or removable clear aligners, and suits children, teenagers and adults. Where the jaws themselves need repositioning, orthodontic treatment is combined with jaw surgery. Read more on our orthodontics page.
Periodontics
Periodontists treat the gums and the bone that hold teeth in place. Gum disease (periodontitis) is a common cause of tooth loss in adults and often causes little pain until it is advanced. Our periodontists provide deep cleaning below the gum line, gum surgery and grafting, crown lengthening, and the placement and care of dental implants. Read more on our periodontics page.
Prosthodontics
Prosthodontists restore and replace teeth. They plan and provide crowns, bridges, veneers, complete and partial dentures, and teeth supported by implants, including full-arch treatment. Because these restorations usually rest on work done by other specialists, prosthodontists often coordinate complex plans. Read more on our prosthodontics page.
Paediatric dentistry
Paediatric dentists care for children from infancy through the teenage years. They manage decay and dental injuries in young teeth, monitor development, and look after children who are anxious or who have medical, physical or developmental needs. Read more about paediatric dentistry.
How do the specialties work together?
Many treatment plans cross more than one field. A tooth may need root canal treatment before a crown, gum disease may need to be stable before orthodontic treatment starts, and an implant usually involves a surgeon or periodontist for placement and a prosthodontist for the final tooth. At Collins Street Specialist Centre these specialists work in the same practice, review cases together and agree the sequence of treatment. Our patient coordinators then organise the appointments and help you keep track of each stage.
Imaging and planning on site
Our practice has on-site imaging, including a Planmeca ProMax 3D Max cone beam CT scanner for three-dimensional images of the teeth and jaws, a Planmeca ProMax 2D S3 for panoramic and lateral cephalometric X-rays, and intraoral digital X-rays. Having imaging in the same building means scans are usually taken at your appointment and can be shared between the specialists involved in your care.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book a specialist directly?
Our published guidance is that you do not need a referral to see our specialists, so you can call (03) 9650 2726 to make an appointment. For a child's appointment, please confirm any referral requirements when you book. If your dentist has sent X-rays or a letter, bring them with you.
What if I see the wrong specialist first?
That is not a problem. Your specialist will examine you, explain what they find and, if another field is better suited, arrange for you to see a colleague here. Because everyone works in the same practice, your records and any images taken can be shared with your consent.
Do you provide general check-ups and cleans?
Our team page lists registered specialists in six fields. For routine check-ups and cleans, most patients continue to see their own general dentist, and we keep them informed about the specialist care we provide.
How are fees worked out?
Fees depend on the specialty, the procedure and what is involved in your case. After your consultation your specialist will give you a written estimate. Payment plans and early release of superannuation are available subject to each provider's terms.
