Caravan Finance Guide | Loan Structures, Corrected Repayments and Application Checks — Natloans
Choosing caravan finance involves the purchase price, security, repayment term, fees, household cash flow and the lender’s rules for the particular van. Natloans describes comparing options across its lender panel and helping prepare an application. This guide preserves the source’s topics while correcting its cost calculations and separating marketing claims from verified terms.

Four finance pathways, plus paying cash
| Pathway | How to assess it | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Secured personal loan | An agreed asset, often the caravan, secures repayment. Compare price, term, fees and security requirements. | Default can put the secured asset at risk, subject to contract and applicable enforcement requirements. Security does not guarantee the cheapest offer. |
| Unsecured personal loan | No specified asset is pledged. It may be considered where an older van is ineligible security. | The debt remains enforceable. “Unsecured” does not mean no deposit, income-only assessment or immunity from recovery action. |
| Dealer-arranged finance | A distribution channel at the point of sale; inspect the actual loan or hire-purchase contract. | Convenience does not establish cost. Neither dealer nor broker finance is always cheaper. |
| Chattel mortgage | A secured structure commonly discussed for business assets; clarify genuine use, borrower and contract. | A private holiday purchase does not automatically qualify for business terms or tax treatment. Obtain specific advice if business use is proposed. |
| Own funds | Compare available savings with the complete purchase and ownership budget. | Retain capacity for essential costs and unexpected expenses; financing is not compulsory. |
The original promotes secured finance for new or near-new vans and larger borrowing, with examples over $30,000 and up to $150,000. It suggests unsecured options for older vans, camper trailers and amounts below $20,000. These are source examples, not verified eligibility thresholds or universal recommendations. Its claim that most buyers need finance and secured loans are the most common structure was not substantiated with market data.
Captured pricing claims: not a current rate table
The source displays advertised interest from 6.49% p.a., weaker-credit rates above 10% p.a., and comparison rates from 6.99% to 22.88% p.a. It provides no verified effective date or comprehensive market sample. Do not infer an average rate, current range or entitlement from those numbers. Credit profile, asset, amount, term, security and lender policy can affect an offer; larger borrowing is not a reason to borrow more to chase a rate.
Interest rate and comparison rate answer different questions. A comparison rate combines interest and most fees into a percentage using stated assumptions. Compare the same amount and term, then inspect actual repayments and fees. It may exclude some costs and does not establish your exact repayment schedule. The source’s claim that it gives the complete annual cost is too broad.
Fees: obtain a complete written schedule
The captured examples include establishment fees of $0–$550 or more, monthly fees of $0 or $15, and some products with $0 exit fees. These are unverified source observations rather than current lender tariffs. Ask about establishment, recurring, early-payout, fixed-rate break and other applicable charges, whether financed or paid separately.
The source’s arithmetic of $550 + 60 × $15 = $1,450 over five years is correct under those assumptions. If a fee is borrowed, interest on it can add further cost. Do not count a financed charge twice when it is already included in the repayment schedule. A lower headline interest rate can still result in a higher total cost.
Corrected repayment illustration: $50,000 at 7.53% p.a.
This is a mathematical example, not a current Natloans offer. Assumptions: $50,000 principal, constant nominal annual interest of 7.53%, monthly rate 7.53% ÷ 12, equal payments at each month-end, no fees, balloon or extra payments. Amounts below use unrounded repayments for totals and are displayed to cents; actual lender day-count and rounding may differ.
| Term | Monthly repayment | Total repaid | Total interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 months | $1,556.00 | $56,016.00 | $6,016.00 |
| 60 months | $1,002.61 | $60,156.62 | $10,156.62 |
| 84 months | $767.65 | $64,482.96 | $14,482.96 |
The 84-month example costs $8,466.96 more interest than the 36-month example, not “over $10,000” as the source claims. The original rounded monthly examples of $1,556, $1,003 and $768 are approximate, but its five- and seven-year interest totals of $10,180 and $14,512 do not match the stated assumptions consistently. The table above replaces them.
The source also claims a two-percentage-point rate gap on $50,000 over five years is approximately $2,700. There is no unique answer without a starting rate and payment assumptions. Under the same model, 7.53% versus 9.53% gives five-year total interest of $10,156.62 versus $13,049.58, a difference of $2,892.96. These numbers are illustrations, not a savings promise.
Use a repayment calculator correctly
Enter the contractual interest rate, principal, term and payment frequency, then include fees and any balloon through the calculator’s supported fields or a separate cash-flow schedule. Do not substitute a comparison rate for the interest rate and add the same fees again. A 6.5% advertised rate and 9.1% comparison rate, as mentioned by the source, do not establish a personalised repayment amount. Run alternative rates and terms using the same assumptions; check the final written schedule.

What a lender may assess
Expect questions about credit history, income and employment, living expenses, existing debts and commitments, the asset and the requested structure. Credit cards, personal loans and buy-now-pay-later facilities should be disclosed accurately. A credit-score label alone does not set an offer or guarantee affordability.
| Source claim | How to use it safely |
|---|---|
| More than six months in employment is viewed favourably | Not a universal minimum or approval rule. Confirm how the lender assesses your employment and income. |
| 100% finance or a 10% deposit | Possible source examples only; verify eligibility and which costs are included. No deposit does not mean no cash needed. |
| Most lenders exclude caravans older than 15 years | No current panel-wide evidence establishes this. Ask the chosen lender about age at start and end of term. |
| A 12-year-old van on a five-year loan exceeds limits | It would be 17 years old at term end. Whether that is acceptable depends on an actual lender rule, not the arithmetic alone. |
| A deposit does not affect pricing | It does not guarantee a lower rate, but deposit and amount can influence lender assessment. Avoid a universal exclusion. |
Prepare documents without assuming a universal checklist
The source lists government photo ID, two or three payslips, three months of bank statements, existing debts and liabilities, and the caravan’s make, model, year and price. It describes comprehensive insurance before funding. For self-employed applicants it lists the latest financial-year tax return, two months of business statements and evidence of 18 months in business.
Those periods and insurance requirements are source examples, not confirmed requirements for every lender. Ask what is needed for your actual circumstances, including income, expenses, deposit source and seller details. Provide sensitive documents only through an agreed secure application channel; public page content cannot replace credit assessment. Complete documents may reduce avoidable queries but do not guarantee speed or approval.
Compare lenders without confusing an enquiry with an application
Reading offers or asking general questions is different from authorising a credit application. Applications can be recorded on a credit report; repeated applications can affect assessment. Ask any broker or lender what credit checks are proposed, when they occur and which applications you are authorising. A broker does not automatically prevent enquiries or protect a score.
Natloans describes a broad Australian lender panel, a multi-award-winning business and help comparing, matching and handling paperwork. These are source service claims, not proof of whole-market coverage, independence, an approved application, the fastest process or the lowest possible price. Ask about panel scope, fees, commissions, excluded lenders and the reasons for any recommendation. A first offer is not automatically poor, and a dealer offer is not automatically inferior.
A practical sequence before committing
- Set the entire purchase and ongoing ownership budget, including funds you can contribute without compromising essentials.
- Check your credit report for errors and identify the actual van, seller, age and condition.
- Model repayments at a stated contractual rate and term; separately include fees, final balance and running costs.
- Ask which lender policies fit before authorising applications; gather the documents that lender requests.
- Compare written offers and purchase terms. Confirm approval conditions, insurance, payment recipient and handover before settlement.
Direct answers
Can I finance an older caravan or buy without a deposit?
Possibly, depending on lender, asset, applicant and complete costs. Neither the source’s 15-year example nor its 100% financing reference is a universal policy. Get a specific written answer before committing.
Does a longer term save money?
Under the constant-rate, no-fee example above it lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest. Compare the complete cost, security exposure and repayment horizon, not just the instalment.
Is an unsecured loan risk-free?
No. There is no specified asset pledged, but repayment obligations and potential debt recovery remain. The source’s promise of retaining full control “regardless” of what happens to the loan is not reliable.
Does a comparison rate give my exact payment?
No. It assists like-for-like cost comparisons under stated assumptions. Use the contractual interest rate and actual fee schedule to calculate and verify your payments.
