What a Senior Legal Assistant does on your matter
A legal assistant does not provide legal advice, but in a family law practice the role carries much of the work that determines how smoothly a matter runs.
Family law files are document-heavy. Financial matters require taxation returns, payslips or business financial statements, bank and credit card statements, superannuation statements and property and loan documents, all of which must be gathered, organised and exchanged. Parenting matters can involve school reports, medical records, correspondence and chronologies. Court matters add filed documents, affidavits, subpoenaed material and strict timeframes: a filed document must generally be served as soon as possible and no more than 12 months after filing, and a disclosure undertaking must be filed before the first court date.
Keeping that material in order, and keeping track of what has been produced and what is outstanding, is a substantial part of what makes a matter proceed efficiently — and it is work that is not billed at a lawyer's rate.
What this means for you
Much of your routine contact about documents, appointments and court dates will come from the support team rather than from your lawyer. That is deliberate and it keeps costs down.
Questions about advice, strategy or the merits of a proposal should go to your lawyer. Questions about what document is needed, when something is due, or where a matter is up to in its administrative steps can usually be answered more quickly by the people handling that work.
Clients working through property, family violence or parenting matters are frequently doing so at the most difficult point in their lives, and the quality of that day-to-day contact matters as much as the quality of the advice.
Arranging an appointment

Who do I speak to about my matter?

Can Ann Marie give me legal advice about my matter?
No, and that distinction is worth understanding rather than working around. A legal assistant does not provide legal advice and does not have carriage of your matter, so questions about strategy, about your entitlements, or about whether a proposal you have received is reasonable should go to your lawyer. What a senior legal assistant does handle is the substantial administrative layer of a family law file: gathering and organising documents, tracking what has been produced and what is still outstanding, and keeping appointments and court dates on track. Questions about what document is needed, when something is due, or where a matter is up to administratively can usually be answered more quickly by the support team than by your lawyer, and that work is not billed at a lawyer's rate.
What documents will I be asked to provide?
Financial matters are document-heavy by nature. You can expect to be asked for taxation returns, payslips or business financial statements, bank and credit card statements, superannuation statements, and property and loan documents. This is not administrative thoroughness for its own sake: since 10 June 2025 the duty of disclosure has been set out in the Family Law Act itself, and it requires each party to disclose their financial circumstances fully, including interests held indirectly through companies or trusts. Parenting matters can involve school reports, medical records, correspondence and a chronology of events. If a matter is in court, filed documents, affidavits and subpoenaed material are added, and these carry strict timeframes.
Who should I contact about an appointment or a document?
Contact the firm on (03) 7020 6542 or through the contact page. Appointments, scheduling, and questions about documents and due dates are handled by the practice rather than requiring your lawyer's time, which keeps costs down and usually gets you an answer sooner. Advice about your matter, about strategy, or about the merits of a proposal should go to your lawyer, because nobody else is in a position to answer those questions. If a situation is urgent, say so when you call rather than waiting for the next scheduled appointment.
