In the event that the nerve in a tooth becomes inflamed or infected, an endodontic treatment otherwise known as root canal treatment may need to be performed. If left untreated, nerve inflammation can result in the formation of an abscess.

HOW DOES ENDODONTIC TREATMENT SAVE A TOOTH?

To understand this procedure, it helps to know about the anatomy of the tooth. Within each tooth structure exists a soft tissue known as the pulp, which is found under a hard layer of dentin. Pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue which keep the tooth alive. During a root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned. The canals are then filled and sealed with a special material.

Afterwards, the remainder of the tooth is filled for protection and then crowned. After restoration, the tooth can then continue to function normally.

Modern root canal treatment is very similar to having a routine filling and usually can be completed in one or two appointments; depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances.
