WHAT IS AN OCCLUSAL SPLINT?

VICTORIAN DENTAL GROUP OFFER THE PROVISION OF A DENTIST PRESCRIBED CUSTOM FITTED OCCLUSAL SPLINT.

An occlusal splint is an appliance made to fit over the functional surfaces of either the upper or the lower teeth to relieve abnormal pressures on the temporomandibular joint, its supporting structures and associated muscles, as often seen in temporomandibular dysfunction. It may also be used to assist in preventing parafunctional wear of teeth

WHY DENTIST PRESCRIBED?

It is paramount the occlusal splint is prescribed, fitted and adjusted by a Dentist. Some websites offer the capacity to send a dental impression to a lab, for the return of an occlusal splint. However, custom casting of the splint alone is not enough, as the splint must be fitted and adjusted to accommodate your natural bite to ensure that it is able to serve its primary purpose. Incorrect fitting of an occlusal splint can exacerbate or induce negative symptoms and discomfort.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT A SPLINT MAY BE BENEFICIAL.

• Notable clenching and grinding of the teeth

• Fractured, chipped or loose teeth

• A dull headache, sore jaws and/or ear pain

• Aching teeth, and stiffness in the face and temples, particularly after you’ve just woken up

• Sore jaws while you’re eating, especially at breakfast time

• Sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks
