WHAT IS LASER DENTISTRY?
Lasers are a relatively new addition to the field of dentistry. During restorative treatments, dental lasers use focused beams of light to remove or reshape tissue, cure bonding materials, and activate bleaching agents during teeth whitening.
To become qualified in the use of lasers, dentists must undergo specific training. Dentists who utilise lasers have a thorough understanding of how the technology works, how to use it properly, and how to select the appropriate lasers and wavelengths for certain procedures.
WHY IS LASER DENTISTRY USEFUL?
Laser dentistry can help improve treatment outcomes because your dentist has precise control over power output and exposure times. Lasers can help to reduce bleeding, swelling, and the risk of infection. In some cases, they can help to protect healthy teeth and gum tissue during the procedure.
Laser treatments can reduce or eliminate the need for dental drills, making you feel more at ease.
7 DENTAL LASER TREATMENT POSSIBILITIES?
Gum disease – Infected or inflammatory gum tissue can be removed with little impact on healthy tissue. Plaque can be removed by using lasers to expose the dental roots.
Tooth Decay – When preparing a tooth for a filling, lasers can assist cut and shape tooth enamel more efficiently than dental drills. Lasers can also be utilised to aid in the bonding of fillings to the tooth or to remove decaying tissue during root canal therapy.
Wisdom teeth – that have only partially erupted or are lodged (impacted) in the gum — Lasers can help cut away gum tissue to expose wisdom teeth that have only partially erupted or are stuck (impacted).
Crown lengthening – This procedure reshapes both gum tissue and bone for healthier tooth structure, which helps with placing restorations on the teeth.
Temporomandibular Disorder— Low-level lasers can help relieve pain and inflammation in the temporomandibular joint and surrounding tissues.
Teeth that are stained or discoloured — In professional teeth whitening treatments, lasers are occasionally utilised to activate the bleaching ingredient and speed up the whitening process.
Gummy Smile – If you want to change the way you look, your dentist may offer laser therapy to help restructure your gum line and remove excess gum tissue so you can see more of your teeth.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF LASER DENTISTRY
When compared to traditional procedures, there are numerous advantages to using lasers in cosmetic and restorative treatments. Your dentist will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of laser treatments with you so that you can make an informed decision.
Anesthesia and sutures may be avoided with laser dentistry. Some laser procedures still require anesthesia.
Reduce the length of treatment and the time it takes to recover
Reduce the amount of bleeding and edema that occurs after surgery, as well as the scarring of surrounding tissues and the risk of infection.
Alleviate discomfort and anxiety by guiding tissue renewal
Drills are still sometimes needed to complete fillings, including shaping, adjusting the bite, and polishing the filling.
Certain procedures can’t be done with laser treatment, depending on the preexisting surrounding tissue or components involving the tooth or gums.
