With the joint efforts of our practitioners and yourself, dental hygiene treatment can save your teeth from decay and gum disease. This gives you a better chance of keeping your teeth for life and reducing the need for potentially costly and painful dental treatments in the future.

At your first appointment, your dental practitioner will learn about your oral and general health. This is often a great time to discuss with the team if you have any anxiety about your dental visit. For many people, fear of coming to the dentist stems from a bad experience. We will take all this on board and talk through step-by-step with you to try and make your dental experience at Victorian Dental Group as easy and as comfortable as possible. 

A FULL DENTAL EXAMINATION.

CHECKING THE TEETH.

Your Dentist, Oral Health Therapist or Dental Hygienist will thoroughly examine your teeth to check for any sign of decay or broken teeth, and check to see if there is any plaque or tartar on your teeth (the build-up on your teeth which can cause gum disease). 

CHECKING THE GUMS. 

After assessing your teeth we check your gums by measuring the space between your teeth and your gums. This can give us a very good indication of the overall health of your gums. If the space – or pocket – between the teeth and gums becomes deeper or there is bleeding, this can be a sign of the early stages of gum disease. 

CHECKING THE ENTIRE MOUTH.

Finally, we check your tongue, cheeks, throat, jaw, face and neck to see if there is any swelling or discomfort which may indicate any problems, including signs of oral cancer. In addition, we can check your jaw alignment, look for any sign of infection in the nerves of your teeth, and check the health of the gums and bones around your teeth.

PLANNING YOUR PERSONAL TREATMENT.

Depending on what is found from your examination, we may recommend taking some dental x-rays. Dental x-rays allow our clinicians to check for decay in-between your teeth which can not always be viewed or detected during a visual exam.

DENTAL HYGIENE [THE CLEAN]

In between visits to Victorian Dental Group, plaque or tartar can start to accumulate on your teeth. It is important that this is routinely removed or it can lead to gum disease and eventually to tooth loss in severe circumstances. We recommend every 6 months that you visit the team at Victorian Dental Group so that we can remove any plaque and/or tartar. Using a specialised instrument called an ultrasonic scaler and high-quality hand instruments, our dental practitioners can painlessly remove this build-up to get your teeth and gums in tip-top shape.

After removing all the hard-to-remove build-up, your teeth will begin to feel nice and smooth as we finish with a polish to remove stains, leaving your teeth sparkling clean. This is done with a special handpiece that buffs off stains using specially formulated paste to give your teeth a gorgeous glow.

DO YOU USE ULTRASONIC DENTAL SCALERS?

We have the latest in ultrasonic scaling technology built into our dental equipment. We use a combination of both ultrasonic and hand scalers to ensure that all surfaces of the teeth are cleaned properly.

DOES GETTING YOUR TEETH CLEANED REMOVE STAINING?

It sure can, but this depends on the extent of the staining. Nicotine staining is often polished away considerably and the removal of build-up can appear to brighten your smile. If you are interested in removing considerable staining and discolouration from your teeth, ask our team about teeth whitening options at your check-up and clean appointment.

DOES A DENTAL CLEAN HURT?

You should not feel any pain from having your teeth professionally cleaned. Occasionally, there may be some foreseeable areas of build-up that may require a small amount of topical (Cream) based anaesthetic to improve your comfort.

CAN I USE MY PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE EXTRAS FOR MY CHECK-UP AND CLEAN?

Yes, you can. We have on the spot claiming via hi-caps . You just need to bring your card with you and depending on the level of your cover available, you will only need to pay any applicable gap payment on the day.

DO YOU HAVE PAYMENT PLANS FOR A CHECK-UP AND CLEAN?

Yes. Payments plans are available via Afterpay, Zippay
