Book Online NEW PATIENT OFFERTop 10 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Teeth Between Dental Visits
Looking to boost your daily oral hygiene? Not only will your dentist be super impressed next time you see them, but you’ll also enjoy a cleaner mouth, fresher breath and much lower risk of decay and gum disease. It’s a win-win, all round!
So, here are our top 10 easy tips for maintaining health teeth between dental visits, brought to you by Melbourne’s leading dental clinic – Victorian Dental Group.
- Brush twice a day, for 2 minutes per brush
Alarmingly, only 53% of Aussies brush twice a day. Brushing twice a day is essential for removing plaque from the gums and grooves of molars. Brush for at least 2 minutes, cleaning the back, front and chewing surfaces of your teeth. - Floss at least once a day
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing at least once a day. Flossing cleans the sides of your teeth which can’t be accessed by brushing, so it’s super important to floss regularly and remove plaque from interdental areas. - Use fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride offers extra protection for your teeth against plaque, which is why all dentists recommend fluoride toothpaste. Abstain from rinsing your mouth after brushing as this removes fluoride from your teeth surfaces and reduces its effectiveness. - Change toothbrushes or toothbrush heads every 3 months
Toothbrushes and electric heads wear down after about 3 months, so make sure to change them at regular intervals. - Cut down on sugary and starchy foods
Sugary, starchy and acidic foods and drinks all feed bacteria in plaque on your teeth, leading to enamel erosion and tooth decay. While it’s OK to enjoy these foods on the occasion, it’s best to replace them with healthy options like fresh fruit for your daily diet. - Invest in a water flosser
A relative newcomer to the oral hygiene landscape, water flossers are a great investment. They’re an excellent addition to your dental routine and can remove plaque in a fun and gentle way. We recommend using string floss first to scrape off and loosen plaque and then using a water flosser afterwards to remove plaque from the mouth. - Eat a healthy diet
Eat a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, which provide your teeth with vitamins, and nuts and dairy, which provide your teeth with calcium. - Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing sugar-free gum helps produce saliva, which is your mouth’s natural defence against bacteria. - Drink plenty of water
Stay hydrated and rinse away bacteria by drinking plenty of tap water. - Avoid smoking
Smoking is detrimental to many aspects of your health, including dental health. It increases your risk of gum disease, as well as oral cancer.
Keep on top of your oral health with these handy tips and book in for an appointment at Victorian Dental Group every 6 months. We’re Melbourne’s leading team for gentle dental care, with skilled and caring dentists and hygienists. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment.
