How to Prevent Cavities in Children: Tips for Parents

Every parent wants the best for their child. This extends to opportunities, happiness and health. The great thing about dental care is that it has a positive effect on all three of these factors, and more!

Getting into good dental habits early is one of the greatest gifts a parents can bestow on their child.

You’re saving them from potential health risks like tooth decay and gum disease, as well as expensive dental work, later down the track.

Here, the team at Victorian Dental Group explains how to prevent cavities in children, outlining our key tips for keen parents:

Encourage a healthy diet

We know what it’s like to be a parent encouraging their kids to eat healthy. Sure, we’d love for them to take to that broccoli or those brussels sprouts, but usually it’s not that easy.

However, there are plenty of yummy, child-friendly foods which are great for your child’s teeth and actively work to prevent cavities. Go for fibre-rich fruit and veg like apples, pears and carrots, dairy products like cheese, and crunchy, mineral-rich nuts like almonds and cashews. These foods help prevent cavities in little ones.

Limit sugar intake

All kids love sugary snacks and it can be hard to say no… especially when they’re so darn cute. But limiting your child’s sugar intake is a great thing to do for your child’s oral (and general) health, as we all know the nasty effects of sugary and starchy foods on teeth. Try to keep sugary foods as a special treat only.

Get into good brushing habits

Apart from diet, brushing is another key part of keeping those cavities away. Show your child how to brush, and make sure you brush together so that you’re leading by example (plus spending some quality time together, too). This can really help make the brushing experience fun in your child’s eyes.

Avoid sharing drinks and utensils (for toddlers)

This one might be a bit surprising, because parents love to show affection by sharing drinks and food. However, for toddlers, this is something to avoid. Toddlers’ mouths are generally free of the bacteria that we adults have in our mouths. Sharing utensils and straws can transport this bacteria to their mouths, causing a higher risk of cavities.

Choose child-friendly toothpaste and toothbrushes

Kids love things that were made just for them. Child-friendly toothpastes and toothbrushes are another tool you can use to encourage brushing, make it fun and keep those cavities away.

Choose the right family dentist

And don’t forget to choose an excellent family dental clinic like Victorian Dental Group, whose dentists are great with kids. We’re Melbourne’s leading team in all types of dentistry and are the clinic of choice for many Melbourne families.
