Book Online NEW PATIENT OFFERHow Often Should You Visit the Dentist? Expert Advice on Routine Checkups
It’s a question we’re asked all the time: how often should I come in for a dental check-up?
Just like taking your car in for a service, or getting a massage to loosen up your muscles, dental check-ups tend to be most effective when they’re done regularly and routinely.
Here, Victorian Dental Group explains how often you should visit the dentist, why routine check-ups are so important, and why our leading team of dentists and hygienists are your first-choice practitioners for check-ups and cleans!
What is a routine check-up?
A dental check-up is an examination of your teeth, gums, lips, tongue, mouth and saliva. Check-ups are an equally important part of your dental hygiene routine, along with brushing and flossing. Check-ups are carried out by your dentist, while a professional clean is carried out by your dental hygienist.
Why are check-ups important?
Regular check-ups can help to spot potential issues early on, when they are easier to treat. This could include an area of your mouth which is prone to plaque build-up, increasing risk of cavities, or early signs of gingivitis and periodontitis which are the two main forms of gum disease. Check-ups can also help to spot signs of more serious problems such as oral cancer. A check-up is most often paired with a professional clean by a hygienist, in which your hygienist scales the teeth to remove calculus – a calcified deposit of plaque which builds-up on the teeth and gums.
How often should you visit the dentist?
You should schedule a visit to the dentist every 6 months. This allows for dentists to monitor your oral health and for hygienists to clean the teeth, removing any calculus build-up. However, if you have oral health issues such as periodontitis, it may be necessary to schedule visits more frequently. Your dentist at Victorian Dental Group will advise you on visit frequency, based on your individual needs as a patient.
When to schedule an immediate dentist appointment
However, if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, please come in and see a dentist as soon as possible:
- Pain in your mouth
- Swollen face
- Trouble swallowing
- Damaged/chipped teeth
- Concerned about your oral health or something in your mouth doesn’t feel right
