Poor oral hygiene causes bad breath. If the teeth and whole mouth are not cleaned regularly, food particles can remain in the mouth for a long time. This can form plaque on the teeth, and food particles become trapped in the mouth that produce foul smells.

Bad breath can be a sign of gum disease caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth. If left untreated, bacteria can irritate and form the gums, causing bad breath, and it can also cause gum inflammation, a disease that can cause tooth decay

BAD BREATH CAN BE CAUSED BY MANY OTHER REASONS

Bad breath can be a symptom of several diseases, such as

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma
Sinus and throat problems such as post-nasal drips can also cause bad breath
Periodontitis – A visit to the dentist can help to rule out periodontitis and identify oral problems that could contribute to bad breath.
Dry Mouth – Many cases of bad breath are associated with the fact that the salivary glands cannot produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist.
Smoking and chewing tobacco – Tobacco-based products can also cause bad breath, irritate gums, stain teeth, impair food taste, and cause cavities that can be a warning sign of gum disease and periodontitis.
High blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Managing Bad Breath

A DENTAL CHECK UP AND DENTAL HYGIENE VISIT

Regular dental check-up and Dental Hygiene appointments remove plaque and bacteria that cause odours. Only a Dentist or Oral Health Therapist can determine whether your bad breath is the result of a serious oral health problem. Bad breath can be caused by a variety of factors, such as tooth decay, plaque or a combination of all three.

BRUSHING & FLOSSING

To get rid of the bacteria that cause bad breath, clean your teeth twice daily by brushing and flossing. Over-the-counter mouthwash can help neutralize or temporarily mask your bad breath. Consistent and thorough oral hygiene and good diet choice are the best defence against bad breath, and your brushing technique is fundamental – learn how to brush your teeth properly here
