The approval of Wegovy marked a significant milestone in obesity treatment, providing a new option for individuals who have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone.

How Does Wegovy Work?

Wegovy works by mimicking the effects of the GLP-1 hormone, which slows down gastric emptying (the process of food leaving the stomach) and increases feelings of fullness after eating. This helps reduce overall calorie intake and can lead to significant weight loss over time.



Patients using Wegovy typically receive a once-weekly injection. The dosage is gradually increased over a period of several weeks to minimise potential side effects. In clinical trials, individuals who used Wegovy in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost an average of 15% to 20% of their body weight over 68 weeks.

Who Can Benefit from Wegovy?

Wegovy is intended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (classified as obese) or adults with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have at least one weight-related health condition. It is not recommended for individuals who do not meet these criteria or for those with certain medical conditions, such as a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.

While Wegovy offers promising benefits, it is important to consider potential risks and side effects. Common side effects of Wegovy include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These side effects are usually mild and tend to decrease over time as the body adjusts to the medication.



More serious risks include the potential for gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, and kidney issues. Additionally, because Wegovy is a relatively new medication, its long-term effects are still being studied. Patients should discuss these risks with their healthcare provider to determine if Wegovy is the right choice for them.
