Is “High Protein” Enough? Why Turning the Pack Over Matters More Than the Front Label
by Kate Michelson on Aug 05, 2026 Walk down any supermarket aisle today and you’ll notice one message everywhere."High Protein"
It appears on ready-made meals, snacks, yoghurts, cereals and even desserts. Protein has become one of the biggest marketing messages in the food industry, and for good reason. Protein is an essential nutrient that supports muscle maintenance, satiety, healthy ageing and recovery from exercise.
At Be Fit Food, we are passionate advocates for eating adequate protein. But here’s the important distinction. High protein does not automatically mean a meal is healthy, appropriate for weight loss or designed to improve metabolic health.
As Accredited Practising Dietitians, we believe consumers deserve the whole picture, not just one headline nutrient.
The problem with front of pack marketing
Food companies are legally allowed to make nutrition content claims such as “high protein” provided they meet the criteria set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand. These claims are regulated and are not misleading in themselves.
The challenge is that consumers often stop reading after seeing the claim.
Research published in Nutrition & Dietetics in 2026 found nutrition content claims are extremely common on Australian ready meals, with protein being one of the most frequently used claims displayed on packaging.
A high protein claim tells you one thing.
It does not tell you:
* How many calories the meal contains * How much carbohydrate it provides * Whether it is high in saturated fat * How much sodium it contains * How many vegetables are included * Whether it aligns with your health goals
That information is found on the back of the pack.
Why calories still matter
Protein is important but calories are also important.
If your goal is to lose weight, improve insulin resistance, reduce visceral fat or better manage type 2 diabetes, your overall energy intake still plays a central role.
Many commercially available ready meals promoted as “high protein” can contain well over 600 calories, with some approaching or exceeding 800 calories per serve.
For someone with high energy requirements, this may be entirely appropriate. For someone following a structured weight loss program, however, a single meal of this size may represent a substantial proportion of their daily energy intake.
The point is not that these meals are “bad.”
The point is that protein alone does not determine whether a meal is appropriate for your personal goals.
Health is more than one nutrient
Nutrition science has moved well beyond focusing on single nutrients.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines encourage dietary patterns rich in vegetables, whole foods, lean protein, healthy fats and appropriate portions, rather than choosing foods based on one marketing claim.
As dietitians, we look at the complete nutritional profile of a meal.
That includes:
* Protein * Total energy * Fibre * Carbohydrate quality * Saturated fat * Sodium * Vegetable content * Ingredient quality * Portion size
Because real health outcomes come from the combination of these factors, not one number on the front of a package.
Why Be Fit Food takes a different approach
At Be Fit Food, we’ve never believed that one nutrient should define a meal.
Yes, every meal is high in protein because preserving lean muscle, improving satiety and supporting metabolic health are important.
But our meals are also designed to provide:
* Portion controlled calories * Lower carbohydrate levels * High vegetable content * Whole food ingredients * No added sugar * No artificial colours or flavours * Lower sodium than many comparable ready meals * Dietitian designed nutritional balance
More importantly, our approach is supported by published clinical research.
Our randomised controlled trial conducted with Deakin University’s Food & Mood Centre demonstrated that participants following our whole food very low energy diet achieved equivalent weight loss to a traditional meal replacement program while experiencing greater gut microbiome diversity and fewer gastrointestinal side effects. This highlights that food quality matters alongside calories and protein.
What should consumers look for?
The next time you pick up a ready meal, don’t stop at the front of the pack.
Turn it over and ask yourself:
* How many calories are in this meal? * Is the serving size realistic? * How much protein does it contain? * Is it balanced with vegetables? * How much fibre does it provide? * What is the sodium content? * Does this meal support my health goals?
Protein is an important part of healthy eating, it is just not the whole story.
At Be Fit Food, we believe Australians deserve transparency, evidence based nutrition and meals that are designed around overall health, not simply the latest marketing trend.
Because when it comes to better health, it’s what’s on the back of the pack that often matters most. Share: Previous The Wake Up Calls That Changed How I See Health Next Exercising More But Still Not Losing Weight? Here’s Why Diet Matters More
